Sally Hardy Eager

Sally Hardy Eager (1926-1989) was a founding member of the Evansville Grove Society in 1979. Born in Chicago and educated at Smith College, she moved to Evansville when she married Leonard Prentice Eager. She was active in Evansville church and community affairs, was an original member of the Evansville Historic Preservation Commission, and served as president of both the Rock County Historical Society and the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. She organized the Evansville History Hunters Club at Levi Leonard Elementary School.

Eager was instrumental in organizing the Grove Society. According to Ruth Ann Montgomery, she was “one of those rare people who could draw people into community activities. . . . She was very knowledgeable about Evansville history, and she was able to (instill) in others the desire to help preserve it.”

She devoted many years to the preservation of Evansville history. She avidly supported surveys of the city’s buildings and was instrumental in getting the Evansville Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places.
