Evansville
Civil War Enlistments.
In anticipation of the 2nd Annual “Rally ‘Round the Flag” Civil War living history weekend in Evansville, to be held on May 18 – 20, 2012, local historians and genealogists have been researching enlistment records to find soldiers from Evansville. Original records were hand-written, and because of some poor penmanship and some errors in transcription, the current records are not entirely reliable.
Evansville appears to have had 69 (or maybe 70 or 71) soldiers who listed Evansville as their place of residence when they enlisted.
Companies of soldiers (approximately 100 men) were recruited locally during the Civil War, so it was common to find concentrations in individual Companies. Company D of the 13th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment had 31 Evansville men in its ranks, and another 4 Evansville men, including Dr. John M. Evans, served in other parts of the 13th Regiment.
Company H of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment had 10 men from Evansville, and 2 others from our town served in the 2nd Regiment’s Band.
Ten men from Evansville served in Company F of the 33rd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. Men from Evansville, in smaller numbers, served in eight other infantry Regiments, in one cavalry Regiment, and in the 1st Brigade Band of General Sherman’s Army of the Tennessee.
Unfortunately, casualties and discharges due to disability ran in high numbers among Evansville’s Civil War soldiers. All 10 of the Evansville men in Company H of the 2nd Wisconsin became casualties; 2 were killed in action and the other 8 were all wounded in action at least once. Companies C and D of the 13th Regiment had 3 Evansville men die of disease while in service, and another 8 were discharged with disability. Five of the 10 Evansville men in the 33rd Regiment likewise were discharged with disability.
Evansville was well represented in the famous Iron Brigade. Twelve Evansville men served in its 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, and another 4 served in the Iron Brigade Band.
If you have an ancestor who served in the Civil War, and particularly if you are related to any of the soldiers on the following list of Evansville’s Civil War recruits, the Evansville Grove Society would like to hear from you, by mail at PO Box 234, Evansville, WI 53536, by e-mail at [email protected], or by telephone at (608) 882-5528.
